SYSTEM HISTORY
COMPOSITE FLOORING SYSTEM HISTORY

Conventional strategies for utilizing steel have focused on maximizing spans and creating versatile products suitable for nearly any building type. SGBS Intl. (SMART GREEN BUILDING SYSTEMS), however, adopted a more unconventional approach to discover an effective solution. We first identified that combining precast slab units, commonly used in the mid-rise residential market, with a steel frame could deliver speed, design flexibility, and cost efficiency. While residential unit layouts typically vary within a floor, they generally align vertically for structural support, utilities, and shafts. Considering the modular nature of residential construction, it became clear that using long-span precast slabs in conjunction with short-span steel girders would be both suitable and efficient. Our ENVIROBEAM® resolved the issue associated with a standard wide flange beam positioned below the slab.

The fabrication process for the ENVIROBEAM starts with a standard wide flange section that, when precisely cut through the web, produces two equal T-sections. The fabricator then welds a flat bar to form the top flange, resulting in two ENVIROBEAM® from one original beam with no material waste. With an almost limitless supply, the ENVIROBEAM® is produced by your local steel fabricators as part of a comprehensive structural steel package.
